A Backstory that Conceals the Destiny? – Finding God in Video Games

Protagonists in video games don’t always have a backstory that indicates what their destiny will contain… who would have ever expected that a simple plumber named Mario would embark on a life-long journey to save a princess, an outcast named Aloy would bear the burden of restoring her world, or a spiky-haired boy in over-sized shorts named Sora would be responsible for saving a multi-verse? Their background may not look the part, but they were chosen based on the developer’s plan, the needs of the story that they are in, and the specific people they were designed to meet, interact with, and save.

When we look back at who we were, who we currently are, and what we perceive as our “limitations” we can get a distorted view of how God views us and His plans to use us. The Lord does not call us according to our “works”… He crafted a destiny that is uniquely ours, one that was written before we entered the scene. No matter how common, rejected, limited, or out-of-place we may feel in our storyline, we can know this for certain… the Father knows exactly who we are and who we are designed to be. He isn’t surprised by any parts of our backstory, there are no accidents in His selection of us, and our place in His divine plan was crafted just for us.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. Romans 8:28-30

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began. 2 Timothy 1:8-9
