This coming Sunday is Breath of Fire IV‘s 25th anniversary. Capcom released its classic fourth entry in its turn-based RPG franchise on GOG’s digital storefront ahead of that quarter-century celebration. It is now fully compatible and playable with Windows 10 and 11 devices, according to a GOG listing.
The 2025 Breath of Fire port is part of the GOG Preservation Program, which GOG says on the game’s listing, which happened thanks to a vote from 23,038 users. The Breath of Fire IV GOG release includes both English and Japanese language options and even cloud saves. The GOG release is set to feature new and improved graphics, including higher resolution and animated characters. Support for modern controllers have also been added meaning you can play the game on your DualSense or even your Xbox Series X|S and Switch controller, but if you want the PS4 Dualshock4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, the Logitech F series controllers, alongside many more can be used when playing the game.
That’s not all; other enhanced features to the game include improved DirectX game renderer and new rendering options; windowed mode, vertical synchronization control, gamma correction, integer Scaling, anti-aliasing, and more. The GOG version of Breath of Fire IV also includes an improved audio engine – restored missing environmental sounds and audio configuration, improved keyboard and mouse support, improved Warehouse and Crane minigames, improved F9 exit screen, issue-free battle and combo system with all crashes fixed, issue-free cutscene scripting and issue-free task switching.
Breath of Fire IV was initially launched in Japan on April 27th, 2000, for the original PlayStation. Later that year, it was launched in North America on November 29th, 2000, then finally came to Europe on August 3rd, 2001. The game was later ported to PC in 2003, but only in European and Japanese regions. Breath of Fire IV takes place in a faraway land where two continents float, separated by a vast swamp-land, with the two lands never interacting with each other until one day contact was made, where war between the two powers, known as the Fou Empire and the Eastern Alliance, erupted.
“After long and costly fighting between the Fou Empire in the west and an alliance of countries in the east, both sides exhausted all their strength and resources. With no other alternative, the two powers agreed to an armistice. One year later, Princess Elena vanished. She had been travelling in the east from town to town, exploring battlegrounds and visiting war veterans. Her trail vanished in a small town near the front line. Nobody knew her whereabouts,” a synopsis of the game on GOG details.
The Eastern Alliance wanted to avoid sending a large army to the front. Such a move would be a political blunder, breaking the armistice and stirring hostilities. It became impossible to carry out a large-scale search for Elena. Time passed… with no sign of the princess. Elena’s sister, Princess Nina, finally makes up her mind. She leaves on a journey searching for her sister—by herself.”
Breath of Fire IV is now available on GOG for $9.99 USD or $11.99 CAD with a game size file of 527 MB.
