Civilization 7 update 1.2.2 brings huge maps, a new town, and more customization

Civilization 7 will get another update on June 17, 2025, that delivers several content pieces fans have been eagerly waiting for. Among this line-up are Large and Huge map sizes, which will be available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 — older consoles won’t get access to the new sizes due to hardware limitations. These maps will fit up to a dozen civilizations when you play by yourself and up to eight human players online.

Firaxis is also delivering more customization options: Players will be able to turn off the Legacy Path mechanics entirely or for specific Ages. Alternatively, you can enable only a select few of these Paths, forcing specific scenarios to happen, such as an all-out race for the New World or nuclear weapons. In a similar vein, you’ll be able to pick which Crises will appear at the end of Ages.

More customization is coming in with the ability to bypass civilization unlocks, tweak individual AI strengths, and adjust the initial hostility of independent powers on the map. In short: You’ll be able to make life all the more difficult or easy for your people.

If that’s not enough options for you, then fret not: Steam Workshop support is finally coming, so accessing high-quality mods will be simpler than ever.

In terms of new content additions, Firaxis plans to add a new type of Town Specializations: the Resort Town. This settlement class provides additional Gold and Happiness based on how high the Natural Appeal of its tiles is — and it gains extra yields from Natural Wonders. Additionally, the Urban Center has been reworked and will reduce building maintenance costs, allowing you to construct key buildings like the Library and Bath without having to be upgraded to a City — a major boost to Town-centered playstyles.

Other Town types will be adjusted as well: Fort Towns can fit additional Walls, Religious Sites provide a stronger Happiness bonus, Factory Towns have increased Trade Range, Mining Towns provide more Production based on its Improvements, and Hub Towns are the only one getting a nerf, as they’ll generate less Influence in the future.

Update 1.2.2 will also feature 24 new City-State Bonuses, two Pantheons, and 14 Religious Beliefs to deepen the diplomatic and religious gameplay.

Firaxis is also working on Specialist balance, improvements to Treasure Fleets (they’ll be called Treasure Convoys and work over land routes), and other changes.
