The publisher behind the original Guitar Hero games is back. RedOctane Games is returning as a small studio consisting of former Guitar Hero and DJ Hero developers.

As part of Embracer Freemode, RedOctane Games will be headed by Simon Ebejer, who has acted as Production Director for several Guitar Hero games, the Studio Head at Vicarious Visions, and VP of Operations at Blizzard Entertainment.
“Rhythm games are about more than just gameplay they’re about feel, flow, and connection to the music and to each other,” said Ebejer. “RedOctane Games is our way of giving back to a genre that means so much to us, while pushing it forward in new and exciting directions.”
Additionally, Charles and Kai Huang, the original founders of the Guitar Hero franchise, will be advisors for RedOctane Games.
Considering the studio’s makeup, it comes as no surprise that RedOctane Games is working on “the next great rhythm game.” The game is now in full production and is expected to be announced later this year.
The studio’s launch video showcases the CRKD Gibson Les Paul controller, which is made by the RedOctane Games team. While this seems like a sign that the studio may be working on a new Guitar Hero PS5 game, a blog post sheds a very tiny bit of light about what this new rhythm game will be.
“This game won’t be Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, Guitar Freaks or Rockband,” says the blog post. “This is something new. A rhythm game built with love, by people who care, with the community at its core in this fast-changing modern world we live in. We firmly believe the expert here is the community and a new generation of development talent, the folks that have kept the lights on these last few years.”
Despite RedOctane Games stating this won’t be another Guitar Hero game, that hasn’t stopped fans hoping for a guitar-based video game, with some commenters seemingly assuming that is what the studio is working on.
It does seem likely that this team would create a new game akin to the Guitar Hero games, considering they created a brand new guitar controller. However, we’ll just have to wait until they formally reveal the game to see what RedOctane Games has up its sleeve.
