@HPCpodcast: Silicon Photonics – An Update from Prof. Keren Bergman on a Potentially Transformational Technology for Data Center Chips

Professor Keren Bergman of Columbia University

In this episode of the @HPCpodcast, sponsored by CoolIT, we catch up with optical I/O expert and repeat guest Professor Keren Bergman to discuss the latest developments in the fast moving and promising world of optical technologies: co-packaged photonics/opto-electronics/silicon photonics/photonic integrated circuits (PICs)/optical I/O and optical computing.

She is the Charles Batchelor Professor of Electrical Engineering, Faculty Director of the Columbia Nano Initiative, and Principal Investigator of Lightwave Research Laboratory at Columbia University.

She also is the recipient of the 2016 IEEE Photonics Engineering Award and is a Fellow of Optica (Optical Society of America) and IEEE.

Professor Bergman provides her take on how silicon photonics had progressed since her first appearance April 2023(@HPCpodcast episode 54). There is considerable excitement around (and investment in) the potential of silicon photonics, which may be poised to deliver significantly faster chip-to-chip data movement while reducing heat within servers and data centers.

According to Professor Bergman, the technology is progressing well, she provides her forecast for commercial viability and also the practical impact of silicon photonics on chip and server performance and on data center cooling.

She also discusses the technology’s adoption by chip makers in China and its impact on that country’s strategy for achieving independence from western (and western-aligned) chip technology designers, manufacturers and policy makers.

We also discuss the startup Xscape Photonics, co-founded by Professor Bergman.
