Mafia The Old Country best console graphics mode: Performance VS Quality

Mafia: The Old Country is a great looking game, and on most platforms you can enjoy it at 60 fps, if you prefer that over high resolutions. Things get complicated, though, as Mafia: The Old Country also has an optional V-Sync toggle, which when combined with the Quality and Performance graphics modes results in an effective four different modes.

We’ll just get this out of the way now: V-Sync can cause unsightly frame tearing when disabled, even when using a VRR display. As a result, we recommend you always keep V-Sync enabled, regardless of what display you’re using. With that noted, we’re breaking down the best Mafia: The Old Country graphics mode to use on each console.

On PS5 Pro Performance mode aims for 60 fps with a dynamic – and very pleasing – resolution, while Quality mode will aim for 30 or 40 fps on 60hz and 120hz displays respectively. 40 fps is a pretty good option for this game, while Performance mode will bring you up to a stable 60 fps most of the time. Though there are clear hitches and stutters at some points in the game, which is unavoidable in any mode.

Quality is a reasonable choice for some players with 120hz displays, but Performance mode should be the obvious option for a majority of people.

On PS5 you can expect a 4K-like picture at 30 fps in Quality mode, and a dynamic resolution targeting 60 fps in Performance mode. Again, the image quality and frame rate can fluctuate.

For the best gameplay outcome, we suggest sticking with Performance mode, but you can opt for Quality mode if you want a rock-solid framerate.

On Xbox Series X you’re looking at a simple 30 to 60 fps split between Quality and Performance mode respectively. You can get some surprising performance gains here by disabling V-Sync, but again, you run the risk of severe frame tearing.

Our recommendation is to use Performance mode on Xbox Series X.

If you’re using a VRR display you should know that disabling V-Sync will bring you above 40 fps a majority of the time, resulting in an experience that can be smoothed out. It’s very unstable though, and V-Sync on will cap everything at 30 fps. There’s no Performance mode option to play around with here.

If you have a VRR display and don’t mind some screen tearing, then turning off V-Sync might be worthwhile. Try it out, and if it’s too unstable, swap back to having V-Sync enabled.
