With the releases of the prequel movies as well as a prequel streaming series, we’ve learned that Obi-Wan Kenobi defeated Darth Vader at least twice in a direct lightsaber battle… which makes it all the harder to understand why he simply dropped his guard and allowed Vader defeat him in “A New Hope”. That moment didn’t make sense to me at the time… but all these years later I’ve realized that even though he left Vader broken and defeated more than once, Obi-Wan never truly accomplished his mission until that moment… when he saw Luke and Leia reunited as adults for the first time and prepared to end the Emperor’s reign of terror once and for all. That sly smile as he lowered his sword wasn’t just a feeling of peace… it was one of victory.
Even as followers of Christ, we will all experience times in which we appear to have been defeated… at least by the way victory is typically measured in the physical world. But when we choose to surrender ourselves in full obedience to Christ regardless of the outcome, we can experience joy and peace even in the midst of what looks like a “losing battle”. We can smile and find rest in the knowledge that the real battle has already been fought and won in heavenly places… our part was just to remain faithful to His plan all the way through the end.
So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:54-56
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:4-5
