For the event, the goal of our team was to create a music-themed game inspired by Friday Night Funkin where the players would have to press buttons coordinating with a specific type of musical note. We aimed to include three different levels with the game, each identifying with a particular song and increasing in difficulty.
The controls from the game are fairly simple.
-
‘Q’ corresponds with the right key.
-
‘Z’ corresponds with the left key.
-
‘M’ corresponds with the up key.
-
‘P’ corresponds with the down key.
Each key is spaced a certain distance from each other to make enough room for four individuals to play the game at any given time. To account for different numbers of players, we decided to enforce a self-monitored system.
For example, if we had two players, one player would take control of the Q and Z keys while the other player would take control of the M and P keys. Meanwhile, if we had three players, two people could take control of the Q and P keys respectively while the last person could manage the Z and M keys.
The malleability of the game throughout all of these aspects allows it to have a sense of fluidity never seen before. What makes it all the more engaging is how the controls affect the players within the game. They have different animations for left, right, up, and down, adding a lively environment to the game.
Going back to the controls, in the main screen, you can navigate through the buttons by pressing either W / Up Arrow or S / Down Arrow. This is a rudimentary and simple system that allows even the most inexperienced gamers to navigate through the game.
To click any specific button, the players need to click either the Space or Enter button. This feature once more allows for a more rudimentary gameplay mechanic. This same mechanic can also be seen for the ‘Next Level’ and ‘Replay’ buttons at the end of each level and at the end of the game respectively.
For the game, our primary inspirations were Friday Night Funkin and Music Tiles. All our team members have always been connected to music from our childhood and this game was our way of giving back.
Some other controls that are built in to the computer include either raising, decreasing, or muting the volume of the music. As this game is music-themed, our group highly recommends all players to keep the music at a reasonable level wherein everyone can hear the beats, melodies, and rhythm.
