Painful Admission: I’m pretty mediocre at most fighting games, and there’s a very simple reason for this… I don’t like to block. I personally prefer the mindless chaos of frantically mashing my buttons, trying to land a move through the sheer speed and volume of my actions… a strategy easily overcome by a more patient player. In some fighting games you don’t even have to press a button to block… it’s accomplished by either pressing back or simply doing nothing at all. If I press a button it actually cancels my block, allowing me to take damage… so if I want to block effectively I must be willing to simply stand still, patiently endure the storm, and wait.
While Jesus does not simply “take the wheel” in every situation we face, in the circumstances where we have prayerfully followed His direction on what to do and the situation hasn’t changed, there’s only one action left to take… be still, trust in Him, and wait. It can be extremely difficult to simply stand still while the enemy continues to press the attack, but the Lord has given His children the promise that He is our defense. Let’s resist the urge to impatiently make a move out of frustration and wait on Him today… He always powerfully delivers on His promises, and no one who has placed their trust in Him has ever been left disappointed once the round is over.
And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” Exodus 14:13-14
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! Psalm 46:10
