Funcom’s Dune Awakening MMO aims to bring players to the hostile desert world of Arakis later this year. However, it seems that the release date for the upcoming MMORPG isn’t as solid as many players would hope.
Dune Awakening devs play coy with release date
In an interview with Eurogamer, Funcom revealed that the game’s tentative “early 2025” release date is a very loose bar for launch. While the game is still scheduled to release in this “early 2025” period, Funcom is cautious to give a specific slate for the title.
“I guess it depends how you define early,” Dune Awakening executive producer Scott Junior told the outlet. “It could be the first half of ’25 – that could be ‘early’. So I’ll leave it there. It could be the first half of 2025.”
Alongside the game’s release date, the outlet picked the producer’s brain regarding the game’s monetisation strategy. Dune: Awakening will not be free-to-play and there will be no subsciptions to play, unlike World of Warcraft. Instead, players will pay a one-time fee to access the game and additional fees for expansions.
“We will announce our monetisation strategy a little bit closer to launch,” Junior explained. “There will not be any subscription, though – I can say that.” He was also happy to clarify, “It will not be free-to-play.” Chances are Dune: Awakening will be a premium-priced game.
When Dune: Awakening does finally launch at some point this year, the MMORPG will be released in a full, finished state on PC. Afterwards, content updates will continue to add new storylines and quests to the game, and a console release is planned to arrive, although there are challenges in getting the game to run on Xbox Series S.

While there’s still little concrete information on when the game is actually coming out, it’s clear that Funcom is putting a lot of effort into making sure the game releases right. However, only time will tell if it actually launches in a good state.
